Jackets & Tops
Ice climbing swings between hard work on lead and long, still minutes at the belay. A tough shell that sheds spindrift and dripping water is the core piece, and a warm belay jacket thrown over everything is rarely left at home.
Pants
Crampon points and sharp ice are hard on fabric. Durable shell pants with reinforced inner ankles last longer, and side zips help with venting.
Midlayer
The midlayer has to breathe while they climb and hold warmth when they stop. Thin enough to sit comfortably under a harness.
Headwear
A thin beanie or balaclava that fits under a helmet gets used on almost every route.
Gloves
Most ice climbers bring several pairs: thin ones for climbing, warmer ones for the belay and a spare for when the first pair gets wet. Another pair is rarely the wrong gift.
