1990The First Unsupported Ski Expedition to the North Pole

In 1990, Norwegian explorers Erling Kagge, Børge Ousland, and Geir Randby set out on an ambitious expedition across the drifting Arctic Ocean with the goal of reaching the North Pole without resupply or outside support.

Early in the journey, Randby was forced to withdraw due to severe back problems, leaving Kagge and Ousland to continue across the vast expanse of shifting sea ice.

Throughout the expedition, they relied on proven equipment, including Norrøna’s iconic cotton mountain anorak and other field-tested gear designed for extreme conditions.

When Kagge and Ousland finally reached the North Pole, they completed one of the most significant achievements in modern polar exploration – an expedition that further strengthened Norrøna’s long-standing connection to pioneering adventures in the world’s harshest environments.
