Product Care
Washing
Below, you’ll find helpful guidance on how to wash and care for products made from a variety of materials, including GORE-TEX® and dri, fleece, Polartec, PrimaLoft, cotton, microfiber and Flex1, as well as down and wool.
If water stops beading, your garment’s Durable Water Repellent (DWR) needs refreshing. Use a spray-on DWR, like the Norrøna Water Repellent Tech Spray.
Step 1
- Close all zippers and velcros.
Step 2
- Wash at 40°C with a small amount of mild technical or outdoor-specific detergent.
- Do not use softening, stain removers, rinsing agents or bleach as they can damage the fabric's water-resistant properties (not the membrane/ waterproofing) and the color of the fabric.
- Rinse the garment twice if possible and minimize spinning
- Don't wash with heavily soiled clothing.
Step 3
- Dry the garment on a warm, gentle cycle
- Once dry, tumble dry for a further 20 minutes to reactivate the durable water repellent (DWR) treatment
- If you don't have access to a dryer, iron the garment on a gentle setting
- Don't use steam
If water no longer beads on your product after washing, apply a spray-on DWR treatment such as Norrøna Water Repellent Tech Spray and dry it again.
We recommend using a mild, liquid detergent that is free from fabric softeners, bleach, and added fragrances. For technical garments such as GORE-TEX® products, a dedicated technical wash is ideal as it helps maintain the fabric’s waterproof and breathable performance. Always avoid fabric softeners and heavily perfumed detergents, as these can reduce the effectiveness of technical materials.
The Guppyfriend™ Washing Bag is a pragmatic solution to prevent synthetic microfibers from entering into rivers and oceans.
The bag captures extremely small fibers that break off during washing and hinder them from making their way into the marine ecosystem. After a while you can peel out a ball of fibers and discard it in the plastic recycling bin.
Its soft surface also results in less fiber loss which protect your garment and thus extends the garment's lifetime. It is entirely made of nylon which is untreated, undyed, and does not contain any additives.
When washing Norrøna down clothing, the washing instructions attached to the garment must be checked, but are generally as follows:
Step 1
- Machine wash on a gentle cycle at 40°C with gentle soap.
We recommend 2 rinse cycles. Do not bleach or use fabric softener.
Step 2
- Tumble dry on low heat with 2 clean tennis balls in the jacket until completely dry.
The tennis balls will help to distribute the down evenly and maintain the loft effect. Do not dry clean.
Step 1
- Always follow the care label instructions on the garment label
Step 2
- Machine wash warm (<40 °C). Avoid use of bleach and fabric softner.
Step 3
- Tumble dry low. Do not iron, and do not dry clean.
Remember that wool has natural odor-regulating properties and can be used for several days without smelling if it’s aired out well.
Follow the attached washing instructions for the Norrøna baselayer in merino wool.
Step 1
- Machine wash with a gentle cycle (30°C) with wool-specific washing liquid. Do not bleach.
Step 2
- Let it air dry - do not tumble dry.
Iron at maximum 110°C. However, this should not be necessary. Do not dry clean.
Step 1
- Machine wash your Primaloft® product with a mild detergent on a gentle cold-water cycle.
Step 2
- Tumble dry on low or air dry.
To keep your Norrøna product performing at its best, always follow the instructions in the Product Care Guide. Regular washing is important because it removes dirt, oils, and residues that can reduce breathability, insulation, and water repellency.
For example, GORE-TEX® products need to be washed periodically to maintain their waterproof and breathable properties. Skipping proper care can lead to faster wear, reduced performance, and premature product failure.
When washing Norrøna cotton clothing, the washing instructions must be followed.
Most often, Norrøna cotton products are washed as followed:
Step 1
- Wash at 40°C inside-out.
Normally, a cotton garment will shrink a small amount when it is washed for the first time - up to 3%. Do not use any bleach
Step 2
- Products can be ironed using medium heat or dry-cleaned. Do not use a dryer.
When washing Norrøna microfiber clothing, the washing instructions attached to the garment must be checked but are generally as follows:
Step 1
- Wash at 40°C. Do not use bleach.
Step 2
- Machine dry at a low-temperature setting - do not iron.
Norrøna microfiber clothing can be dry-cleaned.
When washing Norrøna fleece clothing, the washing instructions attached to the garment must be followed.
Usually, Norrøna fleece products are washed as followed:
Step 1
- Wash at 40 °C with spinning. Do not use bleach, softener or rinsing agents.
Step 2
- Most of our fleeces dry very quickly on the line, but if necessary, tumble dry at low temperature. Do not iron.
The key to a long-lasting Norrøna products is regular washing. Body oils, sweat, and dirt can damage the adhesives and membrane if left too long. By washing your Norrøna GORE-TEX products with a technical detergent and then heat-treating it in the dryer (on a low setting), you help keep the layers bonded and the breathable pores clear, which can significantly extend the life of your product. Waterproofing
Keep your Norrøna gear performing at its best with proper waterproofing. Learn how to restore water repellency, protect technical fabrics, and maintain the durability and comfort of your products in all conditions.
If water stops beading, your garment’s Durable Water Repellent (DWR) needs refreshing. Use a spray-on DWR, like the Norrøna Water Repellent Tech Spray.
Yes. By giving cotton clothing DWR treatment, the product will not pick up water and dirt as quickly as without the water-repellent finish.
The products do not become waterproof, but it will take longer for water to penetrate the product. It will also make the garments more suitable for winter use.
Step 1
- Spray the Norrøna Water Repellent Natural spray onto the dry and “newly-washed” garment and allow the repellent to sink in for 15-20 minutes.
Step 2
- Wipe off excess water-repellent spray with a damp cloth.
Step 3
- Dry the garment using warmth, e.g. with machine drying.
Spray products provide good water resistance and are quick to use, but are not so easy to apply evenly over the garment.
Liquid water-repellent finish is applied in the washing machine.
Step 1
- Put the water-repellent finish directly into the machine’s detergent receptacle (be sure all remaining soap has been removed)
Step 2
- Wash the garment in the usual way. Do not use soap or fabric softener.
Step 3
- Dry the garment, preferably by a machine dryer. Iron the garment when it is dry.
