Review Summary
Updated August 1, 2026

The Senja Flex1 5" Shorts are a highly-regarded option for active individuals, particularly trail runners.

Standout Features: These shorts excel in storage and thoughtful design. They boast multiple pockets, including side pockets ideal for gels, a secure rear zip pocket that comfortably fits an iPhone 13 (though larger phones may be a squeeze), and a convenient key clip. A unique rear loop allows for carrying a jacket, which reviewers found effective in preventing bouncing. The material is described as lightweight, airy, quick-drying, and high-quality, offering excellent performance even in extreme heat (40+ C).

Common Use-Cases: While primarily recommended for trail running (with reviewers logging runs from 5-25km in various conditions), these shorts are also praised for general training, hiking (even in Nepal), and everyday wear due to their comfort and versatility.

Fit and Comfort Level: Reviewers consistently highlight the shorts' comfort, noting they are soft, don't chafe, and have a good fit, even for those with muscular upper legs. The fit is generally consistent with Norrona's sizing.

Criticisms/Areas for Improvement: The main criticism revolves around the waistband. The elastic is described as narrow, causing the channel rib to fold over. One reviewer also expressed a preference for a zip and popper closure over the current drawcord, though they acknowledged no issues with the latter. The price is noted as high, but reviewers ultimately deem them "worth every penny" due to their quality and features.

Recommendation: The Senja Flex1 5" Shorts are highly recommended for trail runners and other active individuals who prioritize excellent storage, lightweight comfort, and durable performance in a variety of conditions. Their thoughtful design, particularly the pocket system and jacket loop, makes them ideal for longer runs or activities where carrying essentials is crucial. While the price is a consideration, the overall quality and functionality make them a worthwhile investment for those seeking a premium athletic short.

Brilliant running shorts

Had this for about a month and used it for both hiking and trail running, most recently an ultra marathon. Love the lightweight feeling and length of it, and absolutely no chafing. You can comfortably fit 2 gels on each side of the shorts without any sagging, and probably 3 if you tighten it enough. Mind you there’s no pocket to fit a phone, which I think is a fair tradeoff for a trail short, but something to keep in mind when you want to put your phone somewhere before you got your vest or running belt on. My one nitpick is the «stash loop» at the back of the short. It’s is a bit tricky to use. It works great with a t-shirt, but for example inserting a rolled up jacket was tricky during a race. I think I would have preferred it a bit more stretchy and possibly wider.

I’ve got three pairs of these in different colours. The rear pockets are great for essentials like your phone, a foil blanket, etc. The key clip is a great feature too!

Trail running shorts

I have had the shorts for more than a month now doing trail runs from 5-25km in the Swedish forests. I bought them for the small pockets where I can keep one gel in each side pocket, an iphone 13 in the rear zip pocket (not sure a phone much bigger than this will fit) and my key can stay in the hook in the pocket on the right hand side. You could probably squeeze two gels in each side pocket but I haven't tried this. The loop at the back of the shorts I have only used once so far when I placed a jacket in it after it stopped raining after a few km on a run. The jacket stayed in place and did't bounce around as far as I remember. You need to stop to roll it up and place it in the loop, but can pull it out on the move. I replaced an old bitihorn pair of shorts for these. The old shorts had a zip and poppers to keep them in place. These have a draw cord to pull and knot. I probably preferred the bitihorn method but haven't had any issues with the drawcord. The fit seems like normal Norrona sizing for me.

Bought these primarily for running but I find that I’m just wearing them all the time, day to day too. The material feels really high quality and they are the perfect fit for me, who normal who has quite muscular upper legs. Well worth the money.
