Review Summary
Updated October 2, 2026

The Norrøna falketind flex1 Pants are a highly versatile and comfortable softshell pant, overwhelmingly recommended for hiking. Reviewers consistently praise their lightweight feel, excellent fit, and freedom of movement, making them ideal for various outdoor activities and even casual wear.

Standout Features: Exceptional Comfort and Fit: Described as "perfect fit," "comfortable," and "sits like a glove," these pants offer great stretch and mobility, accommodating various body types. Many appreciate the adjustable Velcro waist, eliminating the need for a belt, and the good leg length. Effective Ventilation: Side zippers with mesh provide crucial ventilation, making them suitable for both warm and cooler conditions. This feature is frequently highlighted as a major plus, especially for high-activity use. Thoughtful Pocket Design: Multiple zippered pockets, including thigh pockets, are well-placed and secure, though some wish for deeper pockets for larger phones. A built-in gaiter with a retractable hook at the bottom is also a unique and appreciated detail. Durability and Quick-Drying: Reviewers attest to the pants' durability, with some owning pairs for many years. The quick-drying fabric is another significant advantage for active use. Wind Resistance: The pants offer good wind protection, enhancing comfort in breezy conditions.

Common Use-Cases: While primarily recommended for hiking (including summer hikes, mountain tours, and trekking), the falketind flex1 Pants are remarkably versatile. They are also frequently used for: Mountaineering and Climbing: Their flexibility and durability make them suitable for technical ascents, even with crampons. Ski Touring/Cross-country Skiing: Many use them as an outer layer in milder winter conditions, often with a base layer underneath. Everyday Wear/Travel: Their comfortable fit and stylish appearance make them popular for casual use, commuting, and traveling. Biking, Golf, and other active pursuits.

Fit and Comfort Level: The fit is generally described as excellent, with many finding it true to size. The stretchy fabric contributes significantly to comfort and unrestricted movement. While some find them "aggressive" in fit, others appreciate the "normal fit" that suits a wider range of body types. The adjustable waist is a key comfort feature.

Criticisms and Areas for Improvement: Limited Water Resistance: The most common criticism is their lack of significant waterproofing. They are "NOT waterproof" and "rain protection is pretty much non-existent," requiring backup rain gear in wet conditions. While the DWR coating exists, it's not highly effective and may need refreshing. Breathability in Warm Weather: Despite the ventilation zippers, some users find them a bit warm or "moist" during intense activity in hot weather, wishing for better overall breathability. Pocket Depth/Placement: A few users desire deeper pockets, particularly for larger smartphones, and some question the distribution of pockets (e.g., three on the right leg, one on the left). Price: The pants are considered "pricey" by some, though many feel the quality and longevity justify the cost. Sizing for Shorter Individuals: Taller individuals often praise the leg length, but shorter users might find them a bit long. Zipper Quality: A couple of reviews mention zipper failures after extended use, particularly on older models.

Conclusion: The Norrøna falketind flex1 Pants are highly recommended for active individuals seeking a comfortable, durable, and versatile softshell pant primarily for hiking and other high-output activities in dry to moderately cool conditions. They excel in fit, freedom of movement, and ventilation, making them a go-to choice for many. While not waterproof, their quick-drying nature and wind resistance make them a reliable companion. This product is ideal for someone who prioritizes comfort and mobility for a wide range of outdoor pursuits and everyday wear, and is willing to invest in a high-quality, long-lasting garment, understanding the need for dedicated rain gear in wet weather.

I bought these pants for a two-week trip to Iceland in the Summer (Aug 2-16 2026) and was very pleased with the quality and comfort and usability. Excellent thougth and care into the pants - built in gator basically as there is a retractable hook at the bottom - great quality in zippers and materails - this is a lightweight comfortablel pant that is NOT waterproof or insulated, so have rain pants and proper insulating layers if in a cold/wet scenario as these will not keep you dry/warm in serious weather.
