1987The Broad Peak Expedition

A woman in a yellow, red, and blue jacket and red pants is sitting in front of a red tent. She is wearing sunglasses and holding a red cup. A silver bowl is in front of her. There is a rocky background.

In 1987, Ragnhild Amundsen became the first Norwegian woman to lead a Himalayan climbing expedition when she organized and led an ambitious expedition to Broad Peak (8,051 m) in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range.

At a time when high-altitude mountaineering was still overwhelmingly male-dominated, Amundsen’s leadership marked a significant milestone in Norwegian climbing history.

Equipped with Norrøna clothing, backpacks, and other technical mountain gear, the team operated in one of the world’s most demanding high-altitude environments.

The expedition reflected the growing confidence and international ambitions of Norwegian climbers during the 1980s and demonstrated that a new generation of mountaineers, women included, were helping redefine the boundaries of Himalayan exploration. Amundsen’s achievement remains an important landmark in both Norwegian mountaineering and the history of women in expedition climbing.
