The Norrøna Lightweight 20D Windsack 4/2 is a highly portable and effective emergency shelter, primarily recommended for ski touring and other mountain activities where quick protection from the elements is crucial. Its standout features include its extremely lightweight and small packed size, making it an ideal addition to any backcountry kit. Reviewers consistently praise its ability to provide warmth and shelter from wind and snow, with one user describing it as "like a tent" during a snowy break. It's also noted for its capacity to comfortably fit two people, allowing for a warm and sheltered break to eat or regroup. The windsack can be supported by ski poles, further enhancing its versatility in mountain environments.
While its simplicity is a key aspect of its lightweight design, one reviewer found it "too simple," desiring more attachment points and functions. This suggests that users seeking a multi-functional or highly customizable shelter might find it lacking. However, for its core purpose of providing immediate and effective protection, its basic design is a strength.
Common use-cases highlighted in the reviews include taking breaks during ski touring (the most frequently mentioned activity), seeking shelter from wind in the mountains, and even utilizing solar gain for heating in cold, sunny conditions.
Fit and comfort are described as "big and comfy for two," allowing users to warm up and enjoy a meal inside.
In conclusion, the Norrøna Lightweight 20D Windsack 4/2 is highly recommended for ski tourers, mountaineers, and anyone venturing into exposed, cold, or windy environments who prioritizes a lightweight, compact, and effective emergency shelter. It's perfect for those who value simplicity and quick deployment over extensive features, and who need a reliable way to take a warm and protected break in challenging conditions.
