The Norrøna Lofoten 30L Pack is a highly-regarded, feature-rich backpack primarily designed for ski touring and backcountry skiing. Its standout features include exceptional build quality with durable ECONYL fabric, a comfortable and adjustable fit for various body types, and a plethora of specialized compartments. Reviewers consistently praise its dedicated avalanche safety gear pocket with large, glove-friendly pulls, a convenient top compartment for goggles, and a unique side-accessed lower pocket for wet items like skins or crampons, accessible without removing the pack. The pack also boasts excellent integration with hydration systems and offers various options for ski carry.
Common use-cases extend beyond its primary function, with many users finding it suitable for general hiking, urban activities, cycling, and even as a carry-on for travel due to its thoughtful organization.
In terms of fit and comfort, the Lofoten 30L Pack receives high marks. Users describe it as "good to have on the back," "snug fitting," and "comfortable all day," even when heavily loaded. The adjustability is a recurring positive, allowing both shorter (160 cm female) and taller (190 cm male) individuals to find a comfortable fit. The hip belt is noted for its comfort and adjustability, with a convenient pocket for quick access to small items.
However, the pack isn't without its criticisms. The most frequent complaint revolves around the main compartment's access. Many reviewers find the primary back-panel opening "clumsy" for loading and unloading, especially when compared to a traditional top-loading design. Some express frustration with the internal divider that separates the main compartment into two sections, making it difficult to fit larger items and leading some to modify the pack by cutting out the divider. The lack of an easily accessible external water bottle holder is also a common point of contention, though the bottom-accessed pocket is often used as a workaround. Other minor criticisms include overly long straps that flap around, a helmet web that can be too tight for larger helmets, and a desire for better ventilation against the back. One review also highlighted a quality control issue with seams falling apart after minimal use, though this appears to be an isolated incident. The removal of the Mammut avalanche airbag compatibility is also a disappointment for some.
In conclusion, the Norrøna Lofoten 30L Pack is highly recommended for avid ski tourers and backcountry skiers who prioritize durability, specialized features for winter sports, and a comfortable, adjustable fit. Its thoughtful design for carrying safety gear, skis, and wet items makes it an excellent choice for day trips in challenging winter environments. While it can be adapted for other activities like hiking and general travel, potential customers should be aware of the unique main compartment access and consider if it aligns with their packing preferences.
