1994The Great Across Alaska Trek

A woman wearing a backpack and a dog, both wearing backpacks, stand in a field of grass and brush, overlooking a valley filled with trees. The mountains in the distance are snow-capped.

Between 1994 and 1995, the Norwegians Lars Monsen and Marit Holm completed an extraordinary 3,000-kilometer trek across Alaska, traveling entirely on foot through some of the most remote and demanding wilderness on Earth.

The expedition began after Monsen advertised for a travel companion and selected Holm from a field of 38 applicants.

For months, the pair lived almost exclusively in tents as they crossed mountains, forests, rivers, and vast stretches of Arctic wilderness, enduring extreme weather, isolation, and constant logistical challenges.

Throughout the journey, they relied on Norrøna clothing, backpacks, and other expedition equipment, putting the products to the test in conditions ranging from autumn storms and deep winter cold to the rugged terrain of the Alaskan backcountry.

The crossing became one of the most remarkable Norwegian wilderness expeditions of its era and helped establish both Holm and Monsen as leading figures in modern Scandinavian outdoor exploration.

It also reinforced Norrøna’s close connection to adventurers who pushed themselves – and their equipment – to the limit in some of the world's last great wilderness areas.

Marit Holm remains one of Norrøna’s most active and trusted product testers, bringing more than four decades of wilderness experience into her feedback to the company’s designers and the entire Research, Development & Design (RD&D) team. Her firsthand knowledge from countless expeditions continues to help shape and refine the next generation of Norrøna products.
