1980The First Ski Traverse of Spitsbergen

Two men are cross-country skiing in a snowy, mountainous landscape. Both men are wearing red jackets, backpacks, and ski poles. The sky is a light blue.

In the spring of 1980, Stein P. Aasheim and Tore Rolf Lund completed the first ski traverse of Spitsbergen, crossing the Arctic wilderness from south to north through glaciers, mountains, and vast expanses of polar terrain.

The expedition marked a major milestone in Norwegian polar exploration and showcased a new generation of adventurers willing to venture deep into some of the most remote and unforgiving landscapes on Earth. Like many pioneering Norwegian expeditions of the era, the journey also served as a valuable testing ground for Norrøna clothing and equipment.

Weeks of exposure to Arctic weather, extreme cold, and long days on skis provided firsthand insights into what worked – and what could be improved – in demanding polar conditions. The lessons learned from expeditions such as this would help shape future generations of Norrøna products and strengthen the company's growing reputation among explorers, mountaineers, and polar travelers.
