In the summer of 1972, five young climbers – the Norwegians Odd Eliassen, Ove Skjerven, Erik Boehlke, Per Gran, and the British David Isles – set out on an ambitious expedition to the remote Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan.
Their goal was to climb Noshaq (7,492 m), the highest mountain in Afghanistan, and cross the challenging Hadeng La Pass. Rather than flying, they drove two cars all the way from Oslo through Europe and Asia, turning the journey itself into an expedition. The trip reflected the adventurous spirit of the era: months on the road, limited communication with the outside world, and a willingness to travel to the farthest corners of the globe in search of unclimbed horizons and new mountain experiences. Norrøna developed the famous backpack Hadeng La in a collaboration with this expedition.
Tomas Carlstrøm, climber, visionary, engineer and founder of the outdoor equipment shop Skandinavisk Høyfjellsutstyr is employed as a freelance product developer at Norrøna. Focus is directed towards active development of backpacks and mountain tents, as well as mountain garments. Functionality is now introduced as the second building block of the company, with the extreme user-driven product development.
