In the summer of 1984, a Norwegian expedition led by the Norwegian climbers Hans Christian Doseth, Finn Dæhlie, Dag Kolsrud, and Stein P. Aasheim set out for Pakistan’s Karakoram Range with an audacious goal: the first ascent of the East Face of Great Trango Tower, one of the world's most imposing granite walls.
Equipped with Norrøna trollveggen Gore-Tex jackets and pants, backpacks, and other expedition gear, the team spent weeks battling altitude, storms, and vertical terrain before achieving what many considered one of the greatest climbing feats of the decade.
The triumph was soon overshadowed by tragedy. During the descent, Hans Christian Doseth and Finn Dæhlie lost their lives on the mountain, turning a historic victory into one of the most heartbreaking stories in Norwegian mountaineering. Yet the achievement resonated far beyond Norway. The ascent earned international acclaim and secured its place among the landmark expeditions of modern alpinism.
For Norrøna, Trango became more than an expedition. It became part of the company’s identity – a defining story of ambition, innovation, courage, and sacrifice. More than four decades later, the legacy lived on through the film documentary Trango, which premiered in 2025 and introduces a new generation to one of the most extraordinary chapters in big wall climbing history.
