Introduced in 2004, Norrøna lofoten marked the beginning of a new era in freeride clothing. The collection grew out of fourth-generation owner and current CEO Jørgen Jørgensen’s personal passion for skiing, working closely with a small, dedicated Norrøna design team and a handful of progressive freeriders.
Together, they set out with a simple ambition: not to design to a certain price point or sell thousands of garments, but to create the very best clothing they could for freeride skiing.
The freeriders were given a defining role in everything from fit and functionality to colors and technical details. Combining technical knowledge from Norrøna’s climbing heritage with the more relaxed fit of snowboard clothing, the team developed durable GORE-TEX shells with essential features for big mountains, deep snow, and demanding conditions. They chose bold colors and contrasts to make skiers more visible in the mountains – to their friends, for safety, and in front of the photographers documenting the emerging freeride culture. No detail was included without a purpose.
The result struck a nerve far beyond Norway. The lofoten jacket quickly became something close to a uniform for leading freeriders in countries around the world, helping establish Norrøna as an international freeride brand. The development process also became a defining moment for Norrøna itself: clean design, uncompromising functionality, and every essential detail – an approach that became the foundation of Norrøna’s design philosophy, Loaded Minimalism™.
The name came from the majestic Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway, where some of the first images of the collection were shot – a landscape of steep mountains rising straight from the sea and one of the world’s most spectacular places to ski. More than two decades later, lofoten remains Norrøna’s defining big-mountain freeride collection, continuously refined by new generations of skiers, snowboarders, designers, and adventures around the world.
