Review Summary
Updated April 1, 2026

The lyngen down850 Knickers are a highly recommended insulation layer, primarily designed for skiing and ski touring in cold conditions.

Standout Features: These knickers excel at providing exceptional warmth in frigid temperatures, with users reporting comfort down to -30°C. A key feature is the full-length side zippers, which allow for easy on and off without removing ski boots or other layers, making them incredibly versatile for fluctuating activity levels. They are also praised for being lightweight and highly packable, taking up minimal space in a backpack. The 3/4 length design is appreciated for providing warmth without overheating during active pursuits.

Common Use-Cases: The most frequently mentioned activity is skiing, including resort skiing, ski patrolling, and ski touring, where they are worn under shell pants or bibs for added warmth on chairlifts or during descents. They are also popular for winter camping, cold morning dog walks, and other outdoor events requiring prolonged exposure to cold. Some users even find them suitable for casual wear in cold urban environments.

Fit and Comfort Level: The knickers generally offer a regular, comfortable fit that can be worn both under and over other layers. They are described as non-bulky and soft, allowing for freedom of movement. While most find the fit true to size, some suggest considering sizing up if planning to wear them over thicker pants. The adjustable waist also contributes to a customizable fit.

Criticisms and Areas for Improvement: The most common criticism revolves around the durability of the material and zippers. Several users reported issues with the fabric being "extremely thin" and prone to damage from rough treatment, with one reviewer needing to mend them. Zipper quality was also a concern for some, with instances of zippers splitting. A few users expressed a desire for more down fill for even greater warmth, even if it meant a slight increase in weight. The lack of a convenient way to store the stuff sack when not in use was also noted.

Recommendation: The lyngen down850 Knickers are highly recommended for skiers, ski tourers, and anyone seeking a versatile, lightweight, and exceptionally warm insulation layer for cold weather activities. They are ideal for those who prioritize warmth and packability, especially when needing to quickly add or remove a layer. While the durability of the material and zippers could be improved, their performance in extreme cold and ease of use make them a valuable addition to any winter outdoor enthusiast's gear.

So light and so cozy

I have only used them a few times but every time I am amazed about how warm they are, even on the outside of my shells. I could feel the warmth radiating back and keeping my quads and knees warm; these are ideal for long days in the mountains or an emergency layer. I used them during an AIARE 2 course, and they were perfect for when we were standing around looking at snow crystals.

Bought a pair of these for my wife and I each and we love them on days when you need that extra layer of warmth under your ski pants. My wife in particular gets cold easily and these do wonders to add extra warmth when needed. Tested to -30c. Perfect regular fit.

I bought these for skiing at Åre ski resort since I needed some insulation under my shellpants. I'm use to skitouring and usually wool net pants are warm enough. However it was -20 degrees celcious in Åre so net pants weren't gonna cut it. The down pants kept me super warm and not once did I get cold. I can't wait to test them out while winter camping. I love that they have zippers on both sides and are therefore easy to put on top of my ski pants without taking my ski boots off. I wore the down pants under my shell pants in Åre and they worked great!

As a ski patroller that spends more than my fair share of days on cold/windy chairlifts, these are exactly what I've been looking for. As long as the weather is -5C or colder, they are now mandatory. The full side zips are incredible. Love them and have recommended to a number of friends. I am 5'10", weigh 158 lbs. Bought a size S. 5-10 more pounds and I'd recommend a size M.

Great pair of pants

A great pair of pants that add a surprisingly good amount of warmth despite the modest down weight. Very lightweight, but be mindful of the extremely thin material. I would prefer it to be a little more down in them (if I'm going to carry the cloth & zippers anyway I wouldn't mind carrying some extra down to get a truly warm down pant). Great usability, lightweight, packs down super small. Great pants!
