Review Summary
Updated October 30, 2026

The Trollveggen Powerstretch Pro Zip Hood is a highly versatile and comfortable mid-layer designed for a range of outdoor activities, with a strong emphasis on hiking.

Standout Features: Customers consistently praise its exceptional warmth without being overly bulky, making it ideal for layering. The stretch fabric provides excellent freedom of movement, and many appreciate the snug yet comfortable fit. Key functional features include a well-fitting hood (often noted for fitting under helmets), thumbholes for added warmth and sleeve stability, and easily accessible, large pockets capable of storing essentials like beanies and gloves. The jacket is also lauded for its soft and comfortable material, with some reviews highlighting the beneficial wool/synthetic blend for warmth and breathability. Many users also appreciate the long length in the body and arms, which provides extra insulation and prevents riding up during activity. The vibrant and appealing color options are frequently mentioned as a positive.

Common Use-Cases: While highly recommended for hiking (including glacier hikes and race walking), the jacket's versatility extends to a wide array of outdoor pursuits. It excels as a mid-layer for skiing (fitting well under shell jackets and with the hood under helmets), winter outdoor activities in general, and even cycling. Its warmth and comfort also make it a popular choice for casual everyday wear, including around the house, on cold summer nights, and for travel (e.g., Lapland holidays). It's also noted for being suitable for sailing and as a robust outer layer in milder conditions.

Fit and Comfort Level: The fit is generally described as snug, athletic, and form-fitting, without being restrictive. Many reviewers find it true to size, though some note it can run larger or smaller than other Norrøna products, suggesting a potential inconsistency in sizing. The material is consistently described as soft, warm, and comfortable, making it a pleasure to wear for extended periods. The length in the body and arms is frequently highlighted as a positive, providing excellent coverage and insulation.

Criticisms or Areas for Improvement: The most significant criticism revolves around pilling, particularly on the front fabric around the zipper and pockets, which can occur within a few weeks of wear and make the jacket appear "shabby" despite its performance. Some users also experienced sizing inconsistencies, finding the jacket either too large or too small compared to their usual Norrøna size. One reviewer noted that the fit around the waist could be unflattering for a "trained body shape," creating "bulging material." Another mentioned that the sleeves can become discolored quickly depending on the color choice.

Recommendation: The Trollveggen Powerstretch Pro Zip Hood is highly recommended for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly hikers, who need a warm, comfortable, and versatile mid-layer. It's also an excellent choice for skiers, winter adventurers, and those seeking a high-quality, functional jacket for everyday casual wear. Its blend of warmth, stretch, and thoughtful features makes it ideal for individuals who prioritize comfort and performance in varying conditions. However, potential buyers should be aware of the reported pilling issue and consider trying it on or carefully reviewing the size chart due to occasional sizing inconsistencies.

I bought this for my girlfriend after purchasing one for myself. I use it for everything outside from weather around 12C to -20C (layered, of course). The front is layered which makes it more wind resistant than most fleeces and I love the thumb holes and lengthier wrist cuffs. The warmth to weight ratio on this fleece is absolutely astounding. It's the only sweater I own (fleece, merino, cotton, etc.) that I have a backup of just so if it eventually wears out, I'll have a spare. I've had mine for two years and it shows no signs of wear, which is impressive given that it's my most used sweater. The zipper is fantastic - easily attachable, even with one hand, doesn't snag and as sturdy as the most expensive hardshell jackets. Despite using the sweater in various activities like climbing and active hiking in the mountains, it doesn't smell, but that might vary from person to person. I bought a powerstretch fleece from a different brand because I wanted one without a hood also and honestly it disappointed me when compared to this one. The competing brand's one was not as warm, far worse in windy conditions and the zipper was atrocious compared. Hopefully Norrøna makes one without a hood one day. The sweater does have an alpine fit, so I recommend sizing up unless you want it next-to-skin. But keep in mind that the sweater has great stretch so it isn't restrictive, despite being close to the body. My girlfriend uses this sweater exclusively outside in the autumn now.

I have now worn this hood on multiple outings and it is amazing. As a hiker and race walker, who sweats a lot, it has kept me warm on cold and windy mornings (I’m in France with 10 degrees in the morning) while absorbing sweat which meant that I’ve barely felt it and I’ve been very comfortable. I’m ordering another one.
