Norrøna works to promote decent working conditions and human rights in our supply chains through close cooperation with our suppliers and partners.
The Transparency Act
The Transparency Act (Åpenhetsloven) entered into force on July 1st, 2022. The Transparency Act aims to promote companies’ respect for fundamental human rights and decent working conditions and ensure that consumers, organizations, trade unions, journalists, and the general public have access to information. According to the Transparency Act, companies are required to conduct due diligence when it comes to fundamental human rights and decent working conditions. For more information about Norrøna's due diligence, please read the IEH reports below. Norrøna was a member of Ethical Trade until July 2024.
Fair Wear Foundation
From April 2024, Norrøna became a member of the Fair Wear Foundation. Fair Wear is an important partner in our work with due diligence and reducing risk in our value chain.
Norrøna due diligence assesments
Norrøna’s Responsible Business Conduct (RBC) lays out the expectations we have for ourselves and for all partners we do business with. In addition, it describes how we work with due diligence and human rights in our supply chain.
To clarify what we expect from our suppliers, Norrøna has guidelines for ethical trade in our value chain. These guidelines are known as the Code of Conduct (CoC). All our suppliers and factories must sign this before entering into a partnership. The Code of Conduct is based on key UN international regulation set by the International Labour Organisation( ILO) and the UN Universal, Declaration of Human Rights, and the Code of Labor Practices by Fair Wear Foundation.
Both policies are adopted by management and are communicated publicly on our website.
Mapping and assessment of negative impacts
Our risk assessment covers sector, business, sourcing model, product, and country/facility risks. This analysis is conducted annually, as a minimum. Based on specific risk areas, we have identified the risk parameters we believe are most important to map, evaluate, and manage, aiming to minimize negative impacts and human rights/labor violations in our production facilities.
In 2025, our risk assessment identified five key salient human rights risks within in our value chain:
Worker Representation & Freedom of Association
Excessive Working Hours
Safe & Healthy Working Conditions
Payment of a Living Wage
Lack of Legally Binding Employment Relationships
Manufacturers are evaluated based on their compliance with the Fair Wear Code of Labour Practices, which is based on UN and ILO conventions.
Recognizing gender risks in the textile industry, we've initiated a gender-responsive due diligence process to systematically integrate gender considerations into our risk assessments.
Stop, prevent or reduce negative impact
With support from the Fair Wear Foundation(FWF), Norrøna works closely with manufacturers to prevent and reduce negative impacts across our supply chain. FWF helps us conduct robust third-party assessments, and provides valuable training and resources to improve working conditions, as well as enabling collaboration with other brands.
We believe that responsible purchasing is a fundamental tool to support, rather than undermine our suppliers to meet our requirements. To achieve this we are we striving to:
Smooth out peak production seasons
Utilize a carry-over product strategy
Optimize production cycles and predictability
Monitoring, implementation, and performance
To track the progress and effectiveness of our human rights due diligence efforts, we continuously monitor the implementation of activities. This includes closely tracking and following up on open corrective action plans at the factories until all issues have been addressed. We also identify any recurring issues that might indicate ineffective root cause remediation or the need for different tools. Important tools for progress tracking include:
Onsite assessments
Higg FSLM tool
Factory visits
Brand assessments
Close dialogue with factories
Internal reporting
Communication on how impacts are managed
Norrøna is committed to transparency regarding our value chain. On our website, we are working to provide details about where our products are made, with links to each product page. This includes basic information such as average wages and the most recent assessments. This information is linked to the product to provide this information in an accessible way to the customers. Additionally, we have agreed to share the names of all our manufacturers on the Fair Wear Foundation website.
Provide for or cooperate in remediation when appropriate
If it is identified that Norrøna has caused or contributed to adverse impacts on people, society, or the environment, the company is responsible for ensuring that appropriate remediation is provided, either directly or in cooperation with relevant parties.
Ensuring access to a reliable grievance mechanism in our value chain is a key priority for Norrøna, as it not only helps address workplace issues but also prevents and mitigates broader negative impacts within our value chain.
By 2024, the Fair Wear hotline was successfully implemented across all our Tier 1 facilities. To avoid duplication of efforts, one of our manufacturers operating under the Fair Labor Association (FLA) maintains its own established grievance mechanism. The Fair Wear hotline offers a secure and reliable channel for workers to report potential rights violations. Crucially, complaint handlers speak the local language, allowing workers to express concerns comfortably, effectively, and in full anonymity.
Norrøna human rights due diligence efforts were evaluated during FWF’s Brand Performance Check for the first time in 2025, where Norrøna achieved a benchmarking score of 50/102, placing us in the 'Good' category. While proud of this result, we view it as a stepping stone and a roadmap for continuous improvement. Read the full report:
