Review Summary
Updated November 1, 2026

The Norrøna Trollveggen down800 Hood is a highly regarded down jacket, primarily recommended for extreme cold weather activities such as Arctic expeditions, guiding in frigid environments, and general winter use in temperatures as low as -30°C. Its exceptional warmth is consistently highlighted by users, with many describing it as "the best and warmest jacket" they own, capable of keeping them comfortable even in "less-than-speedy clients" scenarios.

Standout Features:

Exceptional Warmth: The 800-fill down insulation provides superior warmth without feeling heavy or bulky, making it ideal for very cold conditions. Thoughtful Design for Arctic Conditions: Reviewers praise features like ample glove storage, hand-warming pockets (even when gloveless), and a longer back that effectively seals out cold air. The hood is also noted as "big and good" for windy and cold conditions. Lightweight and Comfortable: Despite its warmth, many users are surprised by its "unexpected lightness" and overall comfort, making it suitable for extended wear. High Quality and Durability: The jacket is consistently described as "high quality" and "premium," with one reviewer noting it's chosen by special forces. It's also water-repellent, adding to its versatility in transitional weather. Smart Pockets: Users appreciate the well-placed and functional pockets, including those for keys and the slightly elevated side pockets.

Common Use-Cases:

The most frequently mentioned activity is enduring extreme cold, whether for professional guiding in the Arctic, winter trekking, or simply staying warm during cold walks and skiing. It's also used for day hikes in low 20s Fahrenheit and general cold-weather wear.

Fit and Comfort Level:

The jacket is generally described as comfortable and having an excellent fit, particularly the longer back. However, there's a recurring theme regarding its sizing being larger than expected. Several reviewers, including those who are 6'4" or 187cm, found that a Medium or XL was still quite roomy, suggesting a potential need to size down for a more standard fit, especially if not layering heavily. One reviewer noted that a medium fit friends who are 6'4", while another 186cm user needed a Medium.

Criticisms and Areas for Improvement:

Packability: This is the most significant criticism. Several users found the jacket to be "not packable" and "bulky," with one comparing its packed size to a sleeping bag. This makes it less ideal for situations where compact storage is crucial, though some accept this trade-off for its warmth on expeditions where gear isn't carried far. Internal Pockets: One reviewer wished for two internal "dump" pockets instead of just one. Minor Quality Control Issues: A few isolated incidents were reported, such as threads coming off a sleeve and small amounts of duck down escaping after a month of use. Front Pocket Lining: A suggestion was made to line the front pockets with fleece for added hand warmth and comfort. Neck Wind Protection: One user with a smaller neck found the jacket not as windproof as desired when zipped all the way up. Comparison to Previous Model: One reviewer expressed disappointment, stating it's "much worse" and "bulkier" than the previous Trollveggen down850 model, with "less down" and "awkward pockets."

Conclusion:

The Norrøna Trollveggen down800 Hood is an exceptionally warm and comfortable down jacket, highly recommended for individuals who frequently face extreme cold weather conditions. It's particularly suited for Arctic explorers, professional guides, and anyone needing reliable, high-performance insulation for winter adventures where warmth is paramount. While its packability is a drawback, its superior warmth, thoughtful design, and overall quality make it an excellent choice for those prioritizing protection from the cold over compact storage. Potential customers should be mindful of the generous sizing and consider sizing down if they prefer a snugger fit or don't plan on extensive layering.

I work as a guide worldwide and recently led a trip into northern Finland. I bought this jacket to keep me warm while dealing with temperatures as low as -30°C and some less-than-speedy clients. Not a day passed that I didn't say to myself, "thank god for this jacket". Like most Norronna products, the features are perfectly thought out, plenty of space for glove storage (super important in the Arctic), pockets that actually keep your hands warm when gloveless, excellent fit - particularly the longer back, which keeps the freezing air off your back and frankly it just looks cool. As a guide throughout the world, I deal with all kinds of weather and gear needs, but I find myself coming back to Noronna more and more. It just seems like whoever is designing this stuff is thinking hard and knows what it's actually like to be practising outdoor sports in the wild. Can't recommend enough
