North of the Arctic Circle, the majestic Lofoten island chain is famous for its exceptional beauty, harsh contrasting weathers and unyielding environment. Framed by Alpine-style peaks and glaciers, craggy coastlines, an age-old cod fishing industry, and surreal light, Lofoten’s extreme elements are the very essence and soul of Norway’s outdoor life.

Skiing Lofoten is extreme. Not necessarily as in dangerously steep or extremely difficult, but as in extremely close to the ocean, extremely beautiful, extremely exotic and different to all other places to ski in the world. Unfortunately it is also extremely depended upon the good will of the weather – which obviously enough can be quite mean this far out into the Arctic Ocean, but never the less even much more appreciated when on your side.

The skiing starts from pretty much anywhere along the ocean, with skins or snowshoes and the necessary backcountry and safety gear, shifts gear on the mountain tops at the most approximately 1000 meters above sea level, and ends up back down where it started, or in the next fjord over. The great seafood and atmosphere afterwards, and all the other fantastic outdoor experiences these islands have to offer on land and on water is just the bonus.
